Economic migrants often exist in isolation from social networks - with little access
to health care.Children, the elderly, and pregnant women with no prenatal care are
among the most vulnerable of this group and are often left on their own, creating the
setting for catastrophic outcomes. This session discusses a variety of issues ranging

D3. Global Health Education IV (Workshop): Building an Immigrant Clinic

The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 serverely limited access to health care and
social services for immigrants in the United States. Bridging the gaps in social
services and health care faced by this vulnerable population remains a daunting
task for health care providers. Student, resident and faculty involvement in "free
clinics" can provide a positive solution. This session discusses health care
strategies in the development of a free clinic as well as coalition building,
fundraising, and political organizing. Led by members of Puentes de Salud, a
Latino immigrant clinic being built in south Philadelphia through the efforts of
concerned community members in collaboration with faculty, residents from the
University of Pennsylvania.
