Work is carried out by GHEC's many volunteer members and its standing and ad hoc committees. When appropriate to the task at hand, GHEC partners with other organizations on projects of joint interest. A good example of such collaboration is the global health course modules project. Initiated in late 2005, this educational materials project will be carried out with more than 10 partners, including most importantly, four student organizations.:
• Website
Our website offers a rapidly growing array of resources for students and faculty in addition to the usual organizational information. These include: a global health bibliography, annually updated list of useful websites; informational materials on preparing for an overseas assignment, on foreign language study, and on the major 'players' on the global health stage; and two documents designed to help students and residents plan a global health career.
• Members Listserves
These connect all who have access to e-mail, allowing them to share ideas, resources and elective sites with other members and to receive timely announcements and updates from the Secretariat and governing committees
• Newsletter
Previously published on paper, in 2005 GHEC issued its first electronic newsletter "Update." Initially planned for three times annually, the newsletter will feature theme articles, classic articles revisited, member profiles and news, and sections where members can share ideas, identify new educational resources, post information about new programs, etc.
• Annual and Regional Conferences
GHEC has an annual conference every spring in rotating venues. During the period 1997-2006 the conference has been once in the Caribbean, twice in Canada, three times in Central America, and four times in the US. Attendance usually exceeds 300 and professionals in training regularly account for almost half of the registrants. With plenary and breakout presentations, student posters, organization exhibits and awards for distinguished service, the annual conference provides an effective means for updating information, sharing ideas, recognizing accomplishments and networking. The 'reach' of the annual conference is greatly extended by three to five regional conferences held each year and hosted by GHEC member institutions in collaboration with GHEC. |
